First things first, I want to thank Andrew Perna for passing the torch to me. It's a great responsibility, and I'll do my best to carry on the tradition.

Darius Miles was eligible to play last night after serving a 10-game suspension for violating the NBA's drug policy. Miles played the final 1:46 against the Dallas Mavericks but failed to record a point, rebound, or assist. Nine more to go before Miles' $9 million counts towards the Portland Trail Blazers ' payroll.

Yahoo! Sports reports that Oklahoma City has no intention of buying out Joe Smith’s contract. The Celtics are rumored to have interest but lack the assets to acquire Smith through trade. Celtics' coach Doc Rivers was quoted in today’s Boston Herald as saying the Celtics need a “guard” and a “big.” After starting the season 27-2, the Celtics have lost 4 of their last 6.

Nuggets' coach George Karl praised Kenyon Martin and Nene for offsetting the loss of Marcus Camby and Eduardo Najera. The Nuggets are average on the boards, but Martin’s on-ball defense has been stellar, and Nene is leading the league in field goal percentage. The Nuggets are riding a three-game win streak heading into tonight’s matchup with the Pacers.

Mike D'Antoni hopes that Marbury signs with the Celtics. If it's going to work anywhere, it’s going to work in Boston. The Celtics are led by three veterans who will police the locker room. Doc Rivers is a master motivator who just may strike a chord with Stephon. If it doesn’t work, the Celtics can cut their losses (the veteran’s minimum) and move on. Where’s the risk? I can’t envision a scenario whereby Marbury wreaks havoc or causes long-term damage to the defending champs.

Sixers' General Manager Ed Stefanski has been working the phones to explore trade options. The 76ers were tabbed by many (myself included) to become an elite team this season but have stumbled to a 13-20 record thus far. Philly is only 3 games back of the eighth-seeded Milwaukee Bucks , so another late-season playoff run is possible. Andre Miller and Samuel Dalembert are rumored to be available. Philly would have a hard time getting equal value for Miller who is one of the most under-rated players in the league.

The Portland Trail Blazers are rumored to have an interest in acquiring David Lee from the New York Knicks . Lee provides great energy, but he’s not a good fit in Mike D’Antoni’s offense. D’Antoni prefers forwards who can run the floor and space the court with their outside shooting. Lee provides neither of those skills. Lee would be a perfect fit in Portland’s half-court scheme. The Blazers play at the league’s slowest pace (85.9) but are first in points scored per 100 possessions (113.0).

Holiday Hangover?, by Andrew Perna

The Fundamentals : Dwight Howard says his Olympic experience has contributed to Orlando's success; Greg Oden is going through the same types of growing pains as Andrew Bynum and Howard experienced; the Jazz have been without Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams for a combined 25 games and stand within 3 games of the second seed in the West; Nenad Krstic missed NBA competition; the Lakers and Celtics have gone separate ways since their Christmas Day matchup; and the clock is ticking on basketball in Seattle...

King James after being whistled for traveling with 2.3 seconds left in a loss to the Washington Wizards , "Bad call, we all make mistakes, and I think I got the wrong end of the bargain. I watched it 10 times after the game, and it was clearly a good play."

LeBron described the move as a “crab dribble.” Crab dribble?

You be the judge:
