By Christopher Reina
Certainly by now most of you are already familiar with my Floor Impact Counter and Reina Value. (Please click here to familiarize yourself with the systems.)
I also use the FIC to calculate team totals, both by game and for the season.
In order to determine my team rankings, I have calculated the difference between a team's own FIC per game and their opponents' FIC for the entire season.
The number in parenthesis is the difference between their FIC differential so far this season and their differential from last season, which clearly goes a long way in determining how significantly a team has improved or declined.
• RealGM calculates the Floor Impact Counter using the following formula: (Points + .75 Defensive Rebounds + Offensive Rebounds + Steals + Assists + Blocks - .75 Field Goal Attempts - .375 Free Throw Attempts - Turnovers - .5 Personal Fouls)
Team: 08-09 FIC Differential (Improvement from 07-08)
1. L.A. Lakers : 37.0 (+22.6)
The Lakers are first both offensively and defensively in points per 100 possessions.
2. Utah Jazz : 23.6 (+7.5)
The Jazz have been boosted by a weak schedule (home and home against Clippers) to offset the Deron Williams injury, but the loss at New York to start a five-game road trip that normally would be a 4-1 stretch could turn into a 1-4 or even 0-5 setback.
3. Atlanta Hawks : 19.7 (+20.7)
Since his 0-6 3-point shooting night against Orlando to open the season, Mike Bibby has shot 11-23 to spread opposing defenses for the undefeated Hawks.
4. Miami Heat : 17.1 (+32.6)
The Heat are +6.8 in turnover differential per game. That over/under win total of 33.5 looks even more of the lock that it did a few weeks ago.
5. Orlando Magic : 17.0 (+10.0)
Following surprising losses against Atlanta and Memphis to start the season, they have rattled off four straight wins, but the backcourt remains an area where they will be outplayed on most nights.
6. Boston Celtics : 15.8 (-3.9)
The Boston Three Party will soon be Garnett, Pierce, and Rondo instead of Allen. Rajon Rondo is currently leading all members of his draft class in season FIC, and his per 40 FIC of 14.6 is 3.5 points better than Ray Allen's 11.1.
7. Cleveland Cavaliers : 14.6 (+14.0)
Ben Wallace looked like he was back to his old self against Dallas and Chicago with 13 and 14 rebounds apiece, but he didn't tally a point or rebound in 19 minutes against Indiana and grabbed only four rebounds Saturday at Chicago.
8. New Orleans Hornets : 12.7 (+3.6)
Chris Paul's supporting cast of David West and Tyson Chandler has been shy of their numbers last year through the early part of 08-09.
9. Phoenix Suns : 11.6 (-4.6)
The Suns are scoring 1.46 points per shot (Amare: 2.06, Shaq: 1.85).
10. Detroit Pistons : 11.0 (-4.7)
The Pistons are 0-2 since Allen Iverson's arrival, losing at New Jersey and at home against Boston.
11. Chicago Bulls : 5.2 (9.8)
Derrick Rose is leading all rookies in season FIC, averaging 17.7 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per night in very heavy minutes for Chicago.
12. Toronto Raptors : 4.6 (-1.2)
The Raptors have two of the top-10 season FIC players in Chris Bosh and Jose Calderon.
13. Indiana Pacers : 3.3 (7.1)
Speaking of Calderon, T.J. Ford is averaging 15.6 points and 5.2 assists in 33.5 minutes per game for the Pacers.
14. Denver Nuggets : 2.4 (-5.5)
I like this Denver team a whole lot more than last year, especially if their frontcourt (Nene and K-Mart) can remain as healthy and productive as they've been thus far.
15. Philadelphia 76ers : -2.2 (-2.7)
The Sixers are second in the NBA in rebounding differential per game with a +11.0 margin.
16. Dallas Mavericks : -2.8 (-12.2)
Chris Kaman doesn't think they're a legitimate top tier team, but that really isn't too fresh of a perspective. Beyond the big three of Dirk, Kidd, and Howard, the depth is extremely light and ordinary.
17. Portland TrailBlazers: -4.5 (-3.6)
The 3-3 record, combined with Greg Oden's injury, has tempered expectations, but they've played five playoff teams, and Rudy Fernandez's transition has been seamless. Their current five-game roadtrip will serve as a good barometer for their meddle.
18. Houston Rockets : -4.5 (-15.3)
As the season progresses, I think the Rockets will have to experiment with Tracy McGrady at the point guard with a big lineup that includes Ron Artest and Shane Battier at the wing positions. Rafer Alston has been outplayed by opposing point guards nightly, and there comes a time when Rick Adelman uses McGrady's versatility in more complex ways, particularly because he isn't really that dynamic athletically as he was in Orlando.
19. Memphis Grizzlies : -4.7 (+11.0)
There are currently 10 rookies in the top-100 in season FIC ( ), three of them (Gasol, Mayo, and Arthur) are on the Grizzlies.
20. Milwaukee Bucks : -6.2 (+6.2)
Ramon Sessions is 4th among NBA sophomores in season FIC, ahead of guys like Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, Mike Conley, and Yi Jianlian.
21. Minnesota Timberwolves : -7.1 (+10.0)
Shooting just 33.8% from the floor, Randy Foye has yet to take a step forward in his maturation during his third season.
22. Golden State Warriors : -9.6 (-9.8)
Injuries to Monta Ellis, Corey Maggette, along with the Al Harrington saga has made it difficult for the Warriors to see what they have this season, but Andris Biedrins has unquestionably been excellent, averaging 17.3 points and 14.1 rebounds as the fifth ranked player in the NBA. The usage rate of Stephen Jackson is far too high to justify, even with the injuries.
23. New York Knicks : -10.4 (+6.4)
The Knicks are a promising 4-2, but are the only team over .500 to be outscored for the season, largely thanks to the 29 point loss at Philadelphia. Their four wins have come by an average of 5.5 points as they've demonstrated an ability to win close games.
24. Charlotte Bobcats : -13.9 (-5.4)
The Bobcats have six players (Richardson, Wallace, Felton, Okafor, and Augustin) averaging double-digits this season.
25. Sacramento Kings : -15.5 (-7.0)
The Brad Miller suspension allowed Spencer Hawes to start five games in which he averaged 12.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game in 32 minutes. He also has hit on nine of his 12 3-point attempts.
26. New Jersey Nets : -16.6 (-10.5)
It will take career nights from Devin Harris, like his 38 points against Detroit (24 free throw attempts), for the Nets to beat quality opponents this season.
27. Oklahoma City Thunder: -19.2 (-2.6)
Kevin Durant has improved his shooting percentage from 43.0% to 44.3%, but he has seen a drop in his rebounds, assists and blocks with an increase in turnovers while getting to the line less frequently.
28. San Antonio Spurs : -21.1 (-29.9)
Can the Spurs unintentionally tank themselves into Blake Griffin just over 10 years after they did likewise with Duncan? With the deficit they're in already and the fall with with Parker and Manu on the shelf, the playoffs are a long shot away.
29. Washington Wizards : -25.1 (-21.9)
The Wizards very well couldn't have let Arenas and Jamison leave, but even when healthy this team is on the absolute fringe of contending to make the playoffs.
30. L.A. Clippers : -29.3 (-17.8)
The Clippers are far from the worst team in the NBA in terms of overall talent and should be at least a .400 team if they can get Baron Davis, Chris Kaman, and Marcus Camby healthy together for an extended period of time. |
