By Christopher Reina
We rank NBA players from highest to lowest by my Floor Impact Counter (FIC) for the entire season, not per 40 minutes or per game, which I decided to do because players are only valuable when they are on the floor.
Beside each player’s actual salary, we slide in raw salary figures, ranked top to bottom, which determines their ‘deserved’ salary. We use the actual salaries because players in general deserve whatever their agents can negotiate and GMs/owners can afford to pay.
The player who has the highest FIC receives the highest ‘deserved’ salary. The player with the second highest FIC receives the second highest salary. The player with the hundredth highest FIC receives the hundredth highest salary.
We then calculate the percentage increase or decrease from the actual and deserved and that determines their Reina Value, which is listed below in parenthesis.
- Rank. Player, Team: Season FIC, FIC40 (Reina Value)
1. Chris Paul, NOH: 294, 24.8 (+441%)
Paul became the first player since John Stockton in 91-92 to lead the NBA in assists and steals last year and is well on pace to repeat the feat. He has also elevated his shooting percentage to 51.9%, up from 48.9% last year and 43.0% when he was a rookie.
2. Dwight Howard, ORL: 298, 23.0 (+55%)
Howard has nearly twice as many blocks (58 to 30) as the second player on this list.
3. Dwyane Wade, MIA: 276, 21.4 (+48%)
Wade is second in total assists, steals, and eighth in blocks (just four shy of second) while also coming in second in points per game with 28.5.
4. LeBron James, CLE: 275, 22.5 (+48%)
While many are measuring LeBron for a Knicks' uniform, he is helping the Cavaliers become the most efficient offensive team in the league, with 110.6 points per 100 possessions, his own offensive rating is 119.
5. Chris Bosh, TOR: 243, 18.3 (+46%)
Bosh has averaged 29.6 points over his past five games, including 42 against New Jersey and 40 against Orlando.
6. Andris Biedrins, GSW: 229, 20.0 (+132%)
With an increase in minutes, Biedrins has responded by rebounding at an excellent rate, particularly offensively, playing in Nellie's small ball lineup.
7. Amare Stoudemire, PHX: 224, 16.6 (+38%)
Like Biedrins, Stoudemire has had his minutes increase this season, and his drop in FIC40 21.4 has as much to do with the decrease in Phoenix's pace as it does in how his shooting percentage has dipped three whole points.
8. Tim Duncan, SAS: 220, 18.8 (+0%)
Duncan is averaging 36 minutes and 21.8 points per night, something he hasn't done either of since the 03-04 season.
9. Jason Kidd, DAL: 207, 17.7 (-5%)
Kidd is shooting a career best 46.8% from the floor while also stealing more balls per game (2.5) than ever before.
10. Carlos Boozer, UTA: 206, 20.3 (+59%)
Boozer has 19 or more points in nine out of his 11 games, but he has missed Utah's past three games and is likely to be out through the week.
11. Brandon Roy, PDX: 202, 14.7 (+486%)
Roy is 11th on this list, but fifth among shooting guards in FIC40.
12. Dirk Nowitzki, DAL: 195, 16.2 (+0%)
Nowitzki is averaging 28.8 points on 48.4% shooting in the Mavs' six wins and 21.4 points on 40.5% shooting in their seven losses.
13. Chris Kaman, LAC: 193, 14.8 (+87%)
Kaman has elevated his shooting percentage to 58.0%, up from 48.3% last season.
14. Paul Pierce, BOS: 191, 13.8 (-9%)
Pierce hasn't shot extremely well this year, but he still has made big shots and has increased his production on the glass.
15. Yao Ming, HOU: 190, 15.5 (+5%)
Yao is averaging 21.6 points over his past five games, an increase of 3.5.
16. Joe Johnson, ATL: 189, 15.0 (+6%)
Johnson is shooting in the 40's from beyond the arc, the first time he's done that since his final season in Phoenix when he shot 47.8%.
17. Derrick Rose, CHI: 186, 13.2 (+213%)
Last year's top season FIC rookie Al Horford finished the season 52nd. With the way he is heavily used while shooting almost 50% from the floor, he is extremely unlikely to drop much further than this if he remains healthy.
18. Nene Hilario, DEN: 186, 15.8 (+56%)
Nene is leading the league in field goal percentage with a mark of 63.6%. Nene was limited to just 16 games last year, and he had a relatively modest 12.1 FIC40.
19. Kevin Garnett, BOS: 182, 16.1 (-39%)
Garnett's shooting percentage has dropped from 53.9% to 50.8%, but his work on the defensive end is as stingy as ever as he ranks fourth in defensive rating.
20. Andrew Bogut, MIL: 181, 14.4 (+138%)
Bogut has increased his shooting percentage and rebounding rate but desperately needs to improve his 46% free throw shooting.
21. Al Jefferson, MIN: 181, 16.8 (+34%)
The Wolves have been 14.4 points per 100 possessions better with Jefferson on the floor.
22. Andrei Kirilenko, UTA: 180, 18.4 (-3%)
Kirilenko hasn't scored in double figures for the past three games after reaching that plateau in all but one of his previous games.
23. Vince Carter, NJN: 178, 16.0 (+0%)
Carter had a 28.8 game FIC night in the Nets' overtime win at Toronto by going 17-28 shooting with nine boards and six assists.
24. Rasheed Wallace, DET: 175, 15.1 (+4%)
Wallace is having a career season in terms of rebounding and his finest shooting since his early Portland days.
25. Pau Gasol, LAL: 175, 17.0 (-4%)
Gasol hasn't shot as well this season as he did initially with the Lakers last year, but he has improved his rebounding rate and also has been an effective component of their defensive surge.
