Cavs Owner: NY's Fascination With LeBron Just Talk

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert says is not worried about LeBron James bolting to New York when he can become a free agent in 2010, because all the hype is coming from the media rather than James himself, ESPN news services are reporting.

"This is not LeBron James saying this stuff, this is just a media phenomenon here that will pass in time," Gilbert said while appearing on "CNBC Reports."

"We're focused on this year and you know what, so is he, and he's focused on this year and next year and hopefully a long career in Cleveland, Ohio. We believe that and we think we have a great situation here and we're off to a great start."

Nets' Harris Nearly Untouchable?

The Nets enjoyed a breakout weekend from guard Devin Harris, and aren't regretting the Jason Kidd trade they swung with Dallas last season.

"Devin has played great," general manager Kiki Vandeweghe said Monday afternoon. "He's taken us to another level."

Vandeweghe, many believe, has listed Harris as one of the only untouchable players on his roster.

"We're very happy to have him," he said, "very, very happy."

Jackson Settles In With Cavaliers

Rookie forward Darnell Jackson has only appeared in three games for the Cavaliers so far, but is adapting to the NBA life rather nicely.

Jackson, who broke his right wrist prior to the season, made his debut on Nov. 25 against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

"It felt good being out there. That was my first time ever being in the Garden," Jackson told RealGM on Tuesday afternoon. "It felt good running up and down the court with my teammates, and to get a chance to just go out there and get some reps."

The former Jayhawk played just six minutes, scoring four points and grabbing two rebounds. His best effort came against the Thunder the following night, when he posted four points and five rebounds in fourteen minutes.

Jackson, who is from the Oklahoma City area, is happy that there is a team in his old stomping grounds.

"Oklahoma needed something like that, especially an NBA team with the Hornets coming and going. The fans are great in Oklahoma, especially when it comes to sports," he said. "It’s a great experience for Oklahoma City fans to go to watch the greatest basketball players in the world out there on that court."

It will be tough for Jackson to earn consistent minutes behind big men like Ben Wallace, J.J. Hickson, and Anderson Varejao with the Cavs, who are second in the Eastern Conference with a 14-3 record.

"I think I just need to take direction and keep working hard. I just need to try and pay attention, and learn everything that I can," he said of how he can earn more time.

If the Cavaliers have championship aspirations, and they'll tell you that they do, playing a guy like Jackson, who won a National Title earlier this year, might help their chances.

"Ever since I got to Kansas, I always thought there was a chance they'd win the National Championship with Wayne Simien, Keith Langford and all the guys that got there before I did," he recalled. "When you go out in the first round, and then the second round in my sophomore year, and lose again my junior year ... it was even sweeter when our year finally came."

Jackson, who entered the NBA with several of his Kansas teammates this season, keeps in touch with Heat rookie point guard Mario Chalmers.

"I talk with Mario all the time. He’s having a lot of fun in Miami, and he’s playing good basketball. I’ve seen him a couple of times on television and I’m real happy for him."

It's likely that they have discussed some of the traditional rookie hazing rituals they have endured. This, just months after they were the big men on campus at Kansas.

"[Laughs] Just getting the donuts and the towels when guys have to take showers," Jackson said of his chores, "and sometimes getting a guy’s bags when we are preparing to go out on trips."

The conversation with Jackson turned serious though, when the topic of LeBron James' pending free agency was brought up.

"It shouldn’t mean anything to the team because it’s LeBron, and he has to deal with that," he said.

No matter how good the Cavaliers are, putting aside a distraction the size of this one will be a difficult task.

"We can’t control his free agency, because it’s still two years away. Our main focus is to win basketball games. Once we play one game, that one doesn’t matter as we look to the next."

Bulls Begin 'Vote For Derrick Rose' Campaign

On Tuesday the Bulls unveiled the "Vote for Derrick Rose" signs, encouraging fans to help make him the first Bulls player to make an all-star team since Michael Jordan in 1998.

The team likely will soon begin a rookie-of-the-year campaign for Rose, similar to the "Brand X" soap boxes filled with all things Elton Brand the Bulls sent out when he was the No. 1 pick in 1999.

Rose doesn't seem the type to let such hype go to his head.

"It's just not his makeup," Vinny Del Negro said. "He's about winning, that's one of his greatest [assets]. He knows his importance to the team but he knows he has to improve in a lot of areas."

LeBron: I Won't Stop Answering 2010 Questions

LeBron James has no intention of turning away from the media circus surrounding his "imminent" free agency when the New York media show up to cover the Knicks on Tuesday.

"I'm going to answer the questions whenever they come, but it's not such a big deal to me," he said. "They're going to come, and as soon as I say I'm not going to talk about it anymore, that's when they're really going to come, so I'm going to answer them and move on like I've been doing."

Nellie Not Going Anywhere

Following his comments that the Warriors will continue to struggle this season, Don Nelson was asked if he plans on staying with Golden State.

"Absolutely," said the Nelson, who signed a two-year, $12 million extension last month. "It means that there's no pressure not to do it the right way, not to do this job the right way ...

"I've built teams wherever I've been with the exception of New York, including this one twice. So it's not new to me. You have to have an understanding that you can struggle. You just don't want to struggle more than one year at a time if you can help it. You can resolve things and build a team in which you're a contender."

Rondo Leaves Reebok For Nike

Rajon Rondo has parted ways with Reebok and will sign a five-year endorsement deal with Nike, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

Rondo has already switched to wearing Nike sneakers this season. His two-year contract with Reebok recently expired and the company had been negotiating to re-sign him. “The contract had ended, and both parties decided to go in a different direction,” spokesman Dan Sarro said.

Nike said it doesn’t comment on marketing deals. “I can tell you that Rajon Rondo is not under contract with Nike at this time,” spokesman KeJuan Wilkins said.

Ilana Nunn, Rondo’s publicist at BDA Sports Management, deferred to Nike due to the “sensitivity of the contract change at this point.”

His “stock has certainly shot up over the past year-plus,” said Jim Delaney of Boston-based Activate Sports & Entertainment.

“From a marketing standpoint, championships are gold,” Delaney said. “Being part of a superstar team that gets a lot more nationally televised attention and being a leader on the court for a player of his stature can translate into much bigger dollars off the court.”

Oden A Little Unsure Of Himself?

Greg Oden made his NBA debut at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night in Portland's 104-97 win over the Knicks.

"Greg hasn't even scratched the surface, yet, because he missed all of last year," said former Blazer Buck Williams on Tuesday. "But I coached against him two or three summers ago with my AAU team. I saw what he could do, firsthand. Right now, he's a little unsure of himself. But once he adjusts to the speed and size and demands of the game, he'll be a much better ballplayer. And he could end up being a dominating, dominating ballplayer."

Grizzlies GM: I Can't Guarantee I'll Be Here At End Of Season

Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said Tuesday that the organization is "fully behind this group of coaches." He said that the team "wants to give this time to unfold."

Wallace was then asked if Marc Iavaroni would still be his head coach at the end of the season.

"I can't guarantee that I'll be here," replied Wallace, making light of the situation.

The Grizzlies start three rookies and are 4-13.

Nelson Wants Crawford To Finish Career With Warriors

Jamal Crawford had an impressive home debut for the Golden State Warriors on Monday night, scoring 40 points on a combination of long three pointers mixed with penetration, which seems to have reaffirmed the reason why he was acquired from the New York Knicks in the eyes of Warriors' coach Don Nelson, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting.

"We thought when we made the trade, Jamal could finish his career here," Nelson said Tuesday. "He's intelligent, and he's good - he's the kind of guy you want to have around. He can also play a lot of minutes without getting fatigued."

Crawford played 50 minutes, 23 seconds against the Heat. Most encouragingly for the Warriors, he took another step forward in the ongoing effort to integrate himself into the offense.

"It's taking some time, but I think I'll continue to get better," Crawford said. "Look at the trade with (Chauncey) Billups and (Allen) Iverson. It takes some time to get acclimated."
